The Dead River lies deep in the heart of Maine's timber country, miles from the nearest paved road. It is a diverse river offering three adventurous whitewater rafting trips. People come back year after year to run the Dead River at highwater because it is an event. Created by flood control releases, the river is pushed beyond its banks and into the trees submerging the shoreline. The Dead is renowned for having the longest continuous stretch of Class III-IV whitewater rafting in New England. There are no slow moving sections of whitewater here. Even finding a resting spot is hard.. Downriver, side streams join the river making the rapids even move turbulent. This means the biggest whitewater and wildest rapids await you at the end. It is unpredictable and never the same. And since highwater dates are limited (see below), spaces fill quickly. So make your whitewater rafting reservations early! All Dead River highwater releases come with a hearty BBQ lunch and picture and/or DVD show of your day's trip.
SUMMER DEAD RIVER RAFTING
Summertime whitewater rafting trips on the Dead River are a perfect introduction to rafting. Since the whitewater is beginner to intermediate, and the minimum age requirement is only eight, this is the perfect family rafting adventure, great for both adults and younger children. It’s also an affordable, fun family rafting vacation experience. Depending on the water level, Funyaks (inflatable kayaks) may be used or you may get to guide your own raft.
The summer recreational flows are ideal for funyak (inflatable kayak) trips.
DEAD RIVER FUNYAK KAYAKING TRIPS
An inflatable kayak that has an open cockpit, is low to the water and is very stable and maneuverable. Before you launch, trained guides give you basic instruction on how to paddle, how to steer and pick a route through small rapids. Then you’ll guide your own funyak through 11 miles of Class II and III whitewater rapids on the Dead River! The guides accompany you the whole way to lend assistance where needed and to offer helpful hints. (Minimum age is 10, weight &water levels permitting.)
EXPERIENCE LEVEL

1-DAY DEAD RIVER RAFTING TRIP ITINERARY
1 Day Dead River Trip meets at 8 AM or 9 AM, in The Forks, Maine and ends around 4:30 p.m. In the morning, rafters meet the guides, sign a general release, and grab a lifejacket and paddle. In cooler weather, wetsuits can be rented that morning for $7-15; a bathing suit, shorts and sneakers are fine on warmer days. After listening to a safety talk, rafters are shuttled to the river put-in. During the rafting trip, we stop for a snack (if the water and weather permit). Ideally, we break at a waterfall or swimming hole. After rafting, we feast on a hearty chicken, steak or salmon BBQ lunch (vegetarians accommodated with advance notice). The day ends around 4:30 with a viewing of slides and/or video of you rafting the big rapids.
