Back in the '80s, several of us were in frustrating management positions with larger whitewater rafting companies. It began to seem like nameless customers were being herded in and herded out. Instead of a fun, adventurous, wilderness career it became a grueling job. We wanted to offer a better product and enjoy ourselves again. So, in 1990 we started Professional River Runners.

We had three simple goals:
  • To employ the best guides,
  • To use the best equipment,
  • To run the best trips, balancing safety and fun.
We're proud to say we've achieved these goals. Today, Professional Rivers Runners is a medium-size, family owned and operated business with a close knit group of friends as staff. We don't sacrifice professionalism for the bottom line. Our priority is to provide our guests with a personable and fun atmosphere along with a safe trip. In choosing PRO as your outfitter, you're assured of these advantages:

Experienced Staff

Our staff is the pride of our company. Our guides average 10 years of river guiding experience. Their whitewater excursions range from the Grand Canyon, to West Virginia, to Australia, New Zealand, Canada and Costa Rica. See our Guides Gallery for bios on the staff (it's also the most humorous section of our website!).
Satisfying Service: Over 50% of our reservations are repeat customers or from word-of-mouth.

Outstanding Safety Record
The Maine rafting industry is overseen by the Maine state Department of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife. You are invited to contact the Department at (207) 287-8000 and ask for the whitewater boating specialist. The Department will confirm that PRO is fully licensed and insured, has been in operation since 1990 and has an outstanding safety record. PRO also has a reputation for employing cream-of-the-crop guides, for having a high quality training program and for using state-of-the-art equipment. State-of-the-Art Equipment: Our medical kits are comprehensive and exceed state regulations. Our new boats are self-bailing and fully rigged with hold-on lines and safety ropes. Our lifejackets are Coast Guard approved 4-buckle high floats. Smooth Logistics: We pride ourselves on running well planned and well executed trips. Examples: a minimum of two boats is required on all river trips to ensure proper back-up in the case of an emergency. A company vehicle always accompanies the trip in the event transportation is needed.
